Items and Soul Gauge
Unlike previous Sonic games, Sonic and the Secret Rings does not have any item boxes. This means that there are no shields or 1-ups anywhere in the game. Extra lives are not needed, as whenever Sonic died he is restarted at various automatic checkpoints throughout the world.

Rings
Rings are what keeps Sonic from getting defeated. As long as he has one Ring, he cannot be defeated. There are two types of Rings. There are the golden Rings, which give Sonic one Ring, and there are silver Rich Rings. These Rich Rings give Sonic 20 rings.

Soul Gauge
In Sonic and the Secret Rings, a Soul Gauge is needed for a couple of moves. When Sonic collects Pearls, they are added to his Soul Gauge. When the Gauge reaches a certain height, Sonic can perform one of his moves. The first move, Speed Break, lets Sonic speed through the level really fast. Press up on the control pad to perform this move. Speed Break lets you speed through the level at a high speed, destroying enemies in your way. You will be stopped by walls and can still be hurt by obsticles. You can also fall down in places where Sonic would need to jump. Sonic speeds as long as there are Pearls in his Soul Gauge, unless you press up on the control pad again to cancel it. The second move, Time Break, allows Sonic to slow everything way down. To perform this attack, press down on the Control Pad. This is a nice way to attack or get by something that is moving really fast. Like Speed Break, it continues until your Soul Gauge is empty or unless you press down again on the Control Pad.

Pearls
Pearls are required to give Sonic's Soul Gauge a boost. They are little shiny white orbs that float throught the Worlds. You can also get them by defeating enemies. There are two different Pearls. The first one boosts the Gauge by a little bit. The second type, the Rich Pearl which looks like a big crystal ball with a pearl in the middle, boosts his Guage by 20 times more than the normal Pearl.

Fire Souls
Fire Souls are the unlockables for Party mode. They unlock characters, games, or modes that you can use. Some missions have 3 Fire Souls that you can collect. Other missions have none.

Medals
When you complete a mission, you may earn a Medals. Earning Medals is based purely on time. Score and Rings do not count at all when getting a Medal. Medals are used for unlocking things in the Special Book or getting Skills. There are 3 types of Medals. Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Gold Medals are earned by completing a mission very fast, whereas a Bronze is earned by getting a so-so time on the mission. You can also earn no Medal, if you have a really slow time.
